Sore on young torts neck

nybuckeye Dec 06, 2006 10:24 PM

My yearling sulcata managed to injure him/herself sometime yesterday. I noticed while he was eating that there was a small sore on the side of his neck that looked like an irritated scrape. I washed it out 3 times today and applied a tripple antibiotic ointment. With dogs, cats, and sometimes birds we use an E. collar to prevent animals from harming themselves.I have seen my little guy relentlessly scratching the wound and irritating it. Does anyone have any advice on how I can prevent him from doing this?

i've seen a few of those on mine as well. i panicked the fist time, since it was the corner of his mouth, and took him to the vet, who gave me an antibiotic cream. i've since used that same cream for other minor scrapes; the way torts tend to scuffle around, it's hard i guess ot expect them never too scuff themselves up.

keep an eye on it and just try and keep it clean, as well as the rest of him, since if he has a poopy arm he'll just rub it in there. if it starts to look infected/inflamed, i'd take him to a vet.

Thanks for the advice, it has been healing nicely, and he has not been scratching at it lately. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the cream given to you by your vet? Thanks again.

good to hear that he's healing up okay.

the cream my vet gave me is gentamicin sulfate 3% (the brand name is vetro-gel). its indicated use is for eye infections, but my understanding is that it's essentially good for any little scrapes they may get.
