Help with starving turtle!

TwigProject Dec 06, 2006 11:51 PM

I hope someone can help- I run a rescue organization that deals with dogs and reptiles, and today I acquired an adult mud turtle from our local humane society that they asked me to come pick up.
They already had it boxed for me when I got there, and now I know why. The poor guy is totally emaciated and weak. He can barely hold his head out of the water to breathe. He's not interested in food- I think his starvation is to the point that he's no longer hungry. I called the humane society back for his history (he was an owner surrender to them) and they stated that the former owner didn't know when he had fed him last.
Is there anything I can do for this poor little guy? I am not as experienced with turtles as I am with snakes and lizards, and I can't access my vet until tomorrow afternoon (though she is also more experienced with snakes and lizards so I don't know if she's going to be much help). I'd love to save this little guy, but I don't know if that's realistic or not, or if he's so far gone that it would be more humane to have him euthanized.
If there are any suggestions as to what I can do for him, please let me know!

Thanks!

Hello,

try soaking the turtle in warm water for about 20-30 minutes a day.Turtles can go for a long period of time without eating but do need water. This may get him going and awake to eat??/

keep him warm to stimulate his appetite, try adding in some live food. sometimes all they need is some stimulaton. best of luck
