Show cage?

codyandkasie Dec 07, 2006 01:35 AM

I am interested in getting a green tree python(more than likely a baby).
I want to make a show cage in my room. I can build anything with wood.

I have a few question though...I know its not as simple as a 2x2 block with a screen top.

Would 2x2x2 be good dimensions?
Screen Top?
Vents?
Plexiglass front?
Heat lamp on top for heat?
Do they need UVB light?
Substrate?
For branches? PVC pipe ok?
What would I seal the wood with?

Any other info you can provide would be great.
Thanks

If you end up getting a baby, you should concentrate your funds on a quality thermostat and house it in a small tub style enclosure until it is at least 18 months old, before moving it into a larger display style enclosure. Of course, many people get this same advice, ignore it, and then come back to this or other forums a month later asking why the animal won't eat, or worse. Check out this link for an idea of what I mean regarding tub style enclosures for babies:

Regarding the larger cages, opinions vary about size. Many keepers use 2'x2'x2' cubes for adults but some prefer cages a bit wider, such as 3'. Some well respected breeders use cages less than 2' wide and some even never use anything but tubs for the animals. If you are looking to build your own out of wood, check this link out:

Avoid top vents, ceramic heaters, plexi-glass, and there is no need for UV lighting.

Good luck,
Bart
