Hibernation

wwwwwells Dec 07, 2006 11:06 AM

Here's a photo of some of my collareds hibernating in a cooler. Some of my lizards hibernate in their cages but the others won't go under on their own. I can't keep the room temperatures low enough in Arizona so I use a cooler with blue ice.

The blue ice trick works but is alot of work since I have to change out the ice block or blocks twice a day to keep it in the 50s. I once use a small refrigerator and some how it condesated and filled the containers I had the lizards in full of water and I lost the lizards.

I used small refrigerators for two years and decided it was a bit too cold. I had to prop the door open about a half inch to keep it from being what I considered too cold. It worked fine, but I did lose one lizard out of about 15 or so at the time. I am not heating my basement now at all, and it is staying at 60 degrees. I was trying to decide when to hibernate my lizards a couple weeks ago. I quit feeding them...one lite burned out after a coupled weeks. I left the other on...it just burned out three days ago...perfect timing :O)

I think a Wine cooler would work, they keep Wine at or around 45*-55*

Thanks for the photo. It's always interesting to see how other people hibernate their lizards.

How deep is the sand in the cooler? Do you sometimes hear your lizards scratching the walls?
