Melanistic male

KenCasstevens Dec 07, 2006 01:54 PM

Figured I'd get a new pic of this jet black beauty. In the right light he has a blue/purple hue to him. He's so calm my vet has even borrowed him for seminars. I keep looking for a female for him, but these guys are really hard to find.

He is a pretty snake! Do the melanistics breed just like other thayeri... fairly random.... or do you actaully get more melanistic babies? Perhaps a mix?

Cool snake... good luck finding him a girlfriend!

I'm really not sure. I bred him last year, but unfortunately his, and another clutch fell prey to mold because of a faulty heater. I think the melanistic ones are just kinda random. I really hope to get a female soon. You have to be careful, though. There are some fakes on the market.

So sorry to hear about the lost clutches, hopefully you'll have better luck this coming season. As for the "fake" melanistics out there... how can you be sure of what you have? What signs do you look for in a melanistic thayeri?

I'm very jealous! I used to see a lot of melanistic Thayeri around in the late 80's early 90's, but they are getting harder to find. I think part of the reason is that people didn't breed for melanistic Thayeri that often, the Loenis phase and MSP sold better and were in higher demand. I've heard, from other people that were working with Thayeri early on, that the melanistic phase is co-dom. and it was not uncommon to have one in every clutch from the early WCs brought into the U.S.
I would definitely breed that bad boy to every female you can get your hands on. You never know what you might get? Keep me in mind if you do! Good luck!

Thanks. I think I will try him with a female, or two. Last spring he was my most active male- always on top of the female non-stop. Never gave her a breather.

i remember when you got that guy... hes one of my favorites, probaly because hes similar to my black rats and probably doesnt get as big as them. they are both about 6 1/2 feet long(which is much bigger than my 5'3" and its probably alot nicer too. black rats have a lil temper sometimes, but they sure are pretty... i attached a photo of willard. i know its the wrong forum, but dont they looks like siblings from distant parents??

two, or three. Dang all of you! Now I have to figure out where to put a black one. As I've said in the past, the female I had 10 years ago was beautiful. They are truly indescribable but I'm sticking to Black Pearl.
