Red Snake...?

graynightblue Dec 07, 2006 06:43 PM

If you all go to the Coachwhip & Racer forum you will see a red snake up near the top left when you first enter. Not one somebody posted but part of the Kingsnake.com background. I am trying to figure out what kind of snake this is. I posted this question there too but there doesn't seem to be much activity there. So I figured I would give you al a go at it. My GF wants a Red snake... Nothing banded... she's too picky (read likes being a pain) like that. She realy likes the way that one looks so of course I get to try to figure out what it is now and to see if it's a viable option for her... I don't have high hopes for it since I've hear bad things about coahcwhips. Guess I will have to do some reading. Thanks folks!

Do you mean this photo?

If so, that is a red phase western coachwhip. They are common in that color phase in parts of west texas as well as occasionally in other parts of the range. Some of the West Texas snakes are big pink snakes in fact.

Coachwhips are a little bit high strung for most people. There aren't many solid red snakes that aren't high strung. The only one I could think of would be a Bloodred Cornsnake. They are pretty much solid red (as adults) and are easy to keep.

This pic shows a nice bloodred corn.

Don Soderberg, who owns that site, is a very reputable breeder. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one from Don if he has any left this year.
