APLAXAR Dec 07, 2006 07:20 PM

so i was curious as to what luck people have had in the past with first year females, just curious what ratios you all have had breeding first year girls, eggs go bad? some go bad some stay good? or a success story? i have a girl going for the first time this year so i had to ask.

I had a first time alterna female lay 12 good eggs this past year. All hatched with out any problems. I look foward to her in the coming years, espesially since I started feeding her some lizards, and will continue to do so, untill she is breed.

I'll have a couple first time females myself this comming season. I think if they have a good weight they should be ok. Here is one of them. I'm shooting for 250 grams, but if they can get in between 240, and 250 I'll let them go.

Yeah my girl is at 275, i was worried that shew would get up to weight so i started her on adult mice, and she shot up in weight so i am going to put her down soon, the male is already down but we are getting real warm weather here in VT so the temps havent been as steady as i would like

Some generalizations I can make from my experiences. First year females have smaller clutches their first year than in subsequent years (i.e.… 10 eggs first year, 14 second and third years). They take longer to lay after their “pre-laying” shed (2 to 3 weeks vice, 7 to 10 days in subsequent years). I haven’t had fertility issues; fertility was the same first year as it was following years (just smaller clutches). Also, I would not try to double clutch a first year female; give her a chance to recover and grow a bit more for later years.
