i use aspen - it is great
I use newspapers. Laid flat. About 3 to 5 sheets thick per foot for adequate absorption.

News paper.

Aspen, burm seems happier.

My first choice is newspaper and I've been using it for decades. Aspen looks a bit nicer but tends to accumulate urates/feces under the surface so you have to be diligent about checking often.

yeah we use newspaper for our snakes also but we just got our burm a new tank that is 96*36*36 and thats a whole lot of newspaper plus its white melamine (sp??) so the newspaper stains it erally bad. i started bying the roles of kraft paper that they sell in the shippin supplies but one roll only last 2 changes... so was just lookin for some other ideas. our red tail is in a 75 gallon our ball python in a 40 br and our baby burm in a 125 gallon so id ont mind paper for all of them but this tank is just wayyyy to big. i was thikin of buyin a role of butcher paper like the kids use in elementary to draw on.. not sure how that would work thogh. thanks for all yalls input.

I've heard some people mention getting the unused end of the roll of newspaper from local newspaper companies. I've yet to look into it, myself, but I intend to.
Take care!

Butcher paper (like the big rolls used in elementary schools) is okay but not nearly as absorbent as newspaper. I have never had any problems iwth using just regular printed newspaper (I usually let it sit for a day or two) but if you have a source for the by products of paper companies, even better. There are also ways to get the corregated cardboard by products that come n various sizes that also work real well.

Yeah, I've never had any problems with printed newspaper, either. It's all I use in all my snake cages and I swear by it for ease of cleaning and providing a healthy environment.
Like you said, newspaper's more absorbent, so I thought un-printed might be the best solution by being more absorbent, with no stain factor. It would also look a bit better in display-type cages (no obituaries, classifieds, etc... :O ). That last sentence would be the only reason I would look into it.
Have a good one!

they can borrow in it if they want. it's light weight and cheap.
even if it get's wet/damp it doesn't take long to dry out again.

I just threw cyrpess mulch in my Burm cage for the winter as my heat in my house is really drying up my cages. One good poop from him and I am regretting it already. I cannot wait to go back to kraftpaper! I hope it's a short winter.
