So what happens to the collareds in the warmer climates? Ie Arizona and Mexico?

I dont understand why they need it so cold in winter, when in nature the outdoor temperature is nowhere near as cold in some places as it is in others?

Do they still hibernate, and assuming they do, how do they keep their fat reserves if it isnt very cold?

The brumation period may not be as long. If they brumate, the really are not burning that many calories as long as they stay under. The nighttime lows may get cool, and where they are under, the sun likely would not warm the ground temps significantly. All questions that hopefully Will can fill us in on in more detail. I know he has told me before he has seen baby chucks out in January etc. I don't think I have ever asked him about baby collareds in the wild.

I have a friend in NM that would not find them until the following Spring.

In the SouthWest desert the daytime temps will go to the 40's-50's for the high and down to the low 30's to the mid 20's at night, the days are short so the ground will not get a chance to warm up from the sum, so we don't se many Reptiles from November throgh March.
