mouse diarrhea

brianray Dec 08, 2006 11:51 AM

My mice aren't doing too well. They have diarrhea and two of the three are losing weight, the third is pregnant. I am giving cat/dog food to pregnant females for extra protein, so I'm wondering if that could be the problem. I also put imitation vanilla in their water bottle to cut down on smells.
If they don't get better then are they healthy enough to feed to snakes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Brian

The male mouse died while I was at work. The small female doesn't look very good at all, so I think I might need to put her down. Any ideas on how to do that?

I think I'm gonna talk to my friends at the pet store about switching to rats...

Thanks,
Brian

A few possibilities are the dye in the dog/cat food and/or too much protein.

I tried dog food without the toxic dyes for awhile with my rats and found that a few would go bonkers on it, eating so much of it that they died.

I also tried the vanilla in the water trick but didn't notice much of a difference, if any at all, so it wasn't worth my time & effort with several water bottles.

To be on the safe side, I'd disinfect their cage real good before putting anymore in there. And I would keep any new ones away from those until you're sure they're healthy again.

Have a good one!

It is said that 1 out of every 4 people are mentally unbalanced. Think of your 3 closest friends, if they're normal, then it's you.
