Pinky mice

bravo39 Aug 08, 2003 07:05 AM

Is it ok to feed them just pinkys at that size? And if so how many a week is ok.
My baby sav is 7" and still only eats aa few crickets a day although he looks and acts healthy. He eats a pinky every three days. Is it ok to feed them just pinkys at that size? And if so how many a week is ok?

Thanks Bravo39

Baby monitors should be fed everyday. You also should have no control over how much they eat. Let them descide by supplying them with ample food. As far as the pinkies are concerned, yes and no. Savs are primarily incectivorious at that age, and mother nature knows what shes doing. However, i read a few posts back about pinkies, and FR, who breeds alot of monitors and is one of, if not the most knowledgable person here, said that he has raised numerous monitors on pinkies with no adverse affects. So, I would say that if your willing to buy several pinkies a day, or you are breading mice to supply that much, you will be just fine with feeding it just pinkies.

My two cents, take it for what its worth.

How long do monitors actually eat pinkies? Not longA few weeks of pinkies then on to fuzzies, hoppers, small, medium, adult mice,RATS!What possible harm could it do in that short time?

Just to clarify, I often feed both crickets and rodents to most baby monitors, but You can only feed rodents.

The problem with many new keepers is, they do not have experience with what will work. So they, think a wide varity of things is best, its not. They then rationalize why it should be. While thats all fine and dandy, in reality, a varied diet has not shown to out perform and good basic diet. Frank

If its Ok then I think im going to stick to pinky mice on every third day and offer a few crickets a day. As long is it wont hurt it. Like I said it loves pinky mice but will chase and eat about 4 crickets and then ignore the rest so there kinda a waste anyway.

Are you the guy with the really tame/ really big Water monitor?

Da Truth Aug 08, 2003 06:58 PM

Nope, that aint me, I have an average sized varanus niloticus, that is "tame" in the sense that he only tries to get away from me when i bother him, and doesnt try to bite.
