Female pastel ball python?...

-ryan- Dec 08, 2006 03:06 PM

I determined exactly why my BP hasn't fed over the past month or so...he's sexually mature and ready to go (that's the nice way of saying he has sperm plugs).

I'd like to start raising him a mate (as I know it will take a female much longer to become ready for breeding than the 9 months it took this little dude). I'm not really too attracted to morphs right now, because of how high the prices are, however I do like pastels. They are beautiful snakes, definately lower in price than most morphs, and they maintain a lot of their natural beauty. Another plus is that a normal paired with a pastel will produce some pastels and some normals, as opposed to some morphs where you would end up with a bunch of possible hets.

What do you think the pricing would be on a hatchling female pastel ball python?

By spring after the next generation hatches, I'd say $200 or less. But thats just speculation.

There is no chance Females will sell for $200 next season. Maybe for ones the look like crap, but a decent one will be at least $300-$400. I think the prices have leveled off on most of the codoms and you won't see the dramatic decreases that were seen this season.

Prices will vary depending on the size and coloration - nicer pastels, obviously fetch more. Just look around. You should be able to pick up a nice pastel for around $300-400.

Ryan, here is a suggestion.

Go to the classifieds and look for a female that is over 800 grams, a normal, or possible het that is fairly inexpensive, and get yourself a nice female or two that are in the 1000 gram range. If you can find one for under $200, you might want to get yourself a normal female that you can breed to your pastel next year, and go from there. As far as female Pastel prices, the last one I sold was for around $375.

My male is a normal, so mainly I would just like a pastel female because I like the look of them, not necessarily because I'm all that concerned with producing pastels. I think that might make breeding even more interesting, but it's certainly not why I would breed them.

Is it standard practice to breed a male morph with a normal female, due to the differences in price between males and females? I've seen a few pics of this. I guess the way I want to do it is kind of backwards then, but I love my Stevie (my male BP), and the only reason I'm looking for a female at all is because I want him to be able to breed (and because I need an excuse for another snake ).

I think that a nice big female Pastel would be such a great addition to my reptile collection. They are such beautiful snakes. Even the normals. Normals, pastels, and albinos are the only ones that seem to interest me. Some of you breeders will hate me for saying this, but I'm waiting for the day that albinos drop within my price range Sorry

Thanks for the advice I will still keep it in mind.

no breeder would get mad at you for saying that. When albino's get to the price that most hobbyist's can afford them, the demand will be high enough that we will be able to sell 20-50 albino's at $250-$350, which equals a nice amount of coin in the pocket and more people will be able to have these beautiful animals. I know I will personally never be upset on only making a grand or two per clutch of eggs.
