Red tegu diet

Rtegu Aug 08, 2003 07:32 AM

I have had an Argentine Red tegu for about 2 years and he is 3ft and approx. 8lbs. Is this an average size for his age? Also I have been feeding him Crickets and wellness brand Catfood about 3X per week mixed w/ various fruits. Is this an acceptable diet? Also, are rodents absolutely essential for his diet? If so are frozen mice an acceptable food source? And how can I prepare these mice and how can I go about feeding them to him? My tegu also seems to lean to one side and raise his belly on one side after he eats ( not directly after), is this normal? Also how can I maintain the proper humidity and such high basking temperature?

My female red lives mostly on mice. That's her main staple. She also gets nectarines, cherries, other fruit, crickets, canaries, finches and canned zoo med monitor/tegu food. I use a 175W basker w 2 flourescents. I use bark as a substrate and mist it about once a week. I mist under the hide box 2-3 times a week. That's all I could suggest

Good advice. They will eat almost anything people eat. Just make sure there are no seeds/pits as they are toxic. The otherday I gave mine left over cheese fries and you would have thought they had not eaten in days.

If seeds are toxic, are the seeds in Kiwi Fruit toxic too?

I don't know about kiwi fruit. Go to the forum posts June 25 under "Made some changes to my cage plans" Mr. Sickle. for a list of recommended foods.
