Which king for novice?

grvc Dec 08, 2006 11:19 PM

I am going to add a kingsnake to my reptile collection and have been doing as much research on-line as posible.Although all are beautiful,I will avoid those species that present difficulties with husbandry and do not take well to handling.I am leaning towards the Florida snakes but would like some opinions from those with experience with these snakes. Are these easier to care for than Cal.kings?Do they respond better to handling?Do they need to hibernate to remain healthy?...ect.Any opions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,GRVC

Brooksi is a great choice, mine are tame eat right out in the open and are all around great, they come in a variety of colors and make very interesting additions to collections. Pretty much any of the kings that are not tri-colors are usually not problem feeders. None of them NEED to be hibernated. But sometimes with the tricolors I hear of people having probs getting them to eat in winter.

Other than that most are easy to keep in a 20 gallon tank with a heat pad or spot light (heat pad is better)

Cal Kings (Lots of natural pattern variations), Brooksi (love them), Easterns (meh), Mexican Blacks (particularly cool), Splendida (love these) and forgive me if I'm forgetting anyone.

All of the getula species are good beginer snakes. Cal kings may be a little more jumpy when very young but they quickly calm down into a wonderful pet. They also usually stay smaller then eastern varieties. But if you like em big, go for the easterns.

Any way you go you won't be disapointed...Kings Rule!
