definatly female. males are WAY out farther than that. also, by the size of your turtle, you should have seen it fan, and its big enough that if it was a male, it equipment would probably come out when tipped up. NICE girl though! i wish i had one that nice i could breed to my boys. congrats on a sweet turtle!

What I have seen from males that I had or caught fan 90 % of the time when held. So I would see it being very rare if that was it male to have not fan by now. Like Greg said do its cloaca would be futher down I can get a photo for you of my male for comparison. Greg do your males fan often and what abotu ones you catch?

Not that great of picks with a snapper that won't stay still but its does the job. I looks even more noticeable in person with his tail straigh and penis in, o sorry about this he wouldn't put it away.

To me, it looks like the distance is the same in my turtle...i dont know. But the non-fanning for all these years convinces me that she is female.

How old does a snapper have to be to be able to tell which sex it is? Mine is just 3 year old. Is that old enough?

kurma Aug 10, 2003 10:32 AM

Mine started fanning at about 6-8 months of age

OH! Well then, at 3 years old, I'd guess it's safe to say, it's a "she"!

Thanks.

I just ran down and measured her... 5 1/2 inches. So I guess I'm still safe in my assumption!
