Substrate question...

coluberking25 Dec 09, 2006 11:28 AM

Is ZooMed's Eco Earth a good substrate for Colombian rainbows? I plan on having a naturalistic set up for him and bought the substrate today. It's made of coconut fibers or husks(something from a coconut o dont have the label right now lol). I would appreciate any thoughts ASAP for I get the snake next week. Thanks in advance.

..I have used the eco-earth stuff. It holds moisture very well and the snakes will burrow in it. The two problems I had with it is that it has to be changed often and it is expensive and also every time I took a snake out of the cage they brought some of it with them and it ended up on the carpet in my snake room. I like the larger coconut chips and chunks better.

...the current owner doesn't recommend that I use them, I can't remember exactly why(I think so he can dig or something along those lines). I just wanted something natural that would make this guy's cage look like the South American rainforest. If there's something out there that's better(no bark chips please, they're nice but let's face it, that's not what it looks like in a rainforest) please let me know.

I like the Western Fir Mulch fro Orchard supply hardware. I htink It's similar to cypress mulch. Nice reddish color, soft texture, absorbant and non-toxic. Everything a snake could ask for.

I've never heard of that stuff. Do you have any pictures so I can see what it looks like? If so, can you please post them here? Thanks in advance.

Hey Scott,

If you go to mywebsite and click on the brazilian care page you'll see a picture of the bag of substrate that I use.

Then jump to the brazilian collection page. I've photographed most of those snakes on the western fir mulch.

Hope this helps.

I bought a bunch of those bricks of stuff bulk a few years ago to use with a variety of snakes. Like you said, it has a nice "forest floor" look.

The problem is that it was extremely dessicating. I had trouble with a lot of snakes not shedding well with that stuff. You can try and keep it moist, but even if you go out of town for a few days it dries out and sucks moisture out of your snakes.
