More housing size - Gold Fish Theory

nickrondeau Dec 09, 2006 05:34 PM

I know the subject is brought up about every five months or so but as my snake gets bigger I keep wondering. You know that cheesey speech in "Big Fish" how they say that a gold fish won't grow bigger if in a small cage? Well do you think that applies and furthermore to snakes? I've had a pueblan "Carter" (see pics in the galelry) for a few years in a 20" long and am wondering when it's time to upgrade him. I want him to be comfortable but also live in an enclosure that models his native, natural home so I don't thin kthe tubs are for me but perhaps a bigger tank. When should I start worrying? What are others doing?

Pueblans are a smaller milksnake, so he would probably be fine in a 20 long for his whole life. The general guideline is to add the width and length of a tank, which should exceed the total length of your snake. So if a 20 long is 30 inches by 12 inches, a 42 inch snake (or smaller) is fine in it.
