Outdoor housing question

FredLobster Dec 09, 2006 08:05 PM

So my sulcac Rosco's not digging spending his winter indoors so I've been thinking about putting a shed in the backyard since he's good about going into his little house when the sun goes down.

With a shed, I can put a heater in it and he can come and go as he pleases won't feel so cramped spending all day inside in a small setup.

I was thinking about getting one of these guys from Home Depot but the metal sheds are cheaper. Does anyone have any experience as to what is best as far as retaining heat and being a quality shed?

Thanks for the input.

Woops... HTML is off in the forums. The shed I'm looking at at Home Depot is the 8' x 8' Regent II from Handy Home Products.

Try this linkinstead... sorry )

It looks like it would work well. Could you insulate it? That would make it easier to heat. I'm sure you sulcata would enjoy that

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to throw up some insulation in between the 2x4 and cover them with plywood.

I'm just not really sure I want to jump into a $500 tortoise house. Kinda hoping someone out there has a less expensive option without skimping on the quality of care for my pet.

Whatever you decide on, make sure it's tall enough for you to stand up straight in. Your back will thank you later.

Good point. I wish I had remembered that when I had chickens. Tiny coops are hard to gather eggs in.

Both houses are 3x3x4 feet with .5" plywood. Surrounding the plywood is .5" redwood pickets. They are heated by 250 watt ceramice heaters. There are rug runner plastic protectors over the openings. The tops are shingled.
I live in AZ, so I don't know if this could work for you.

Large Igloo type dog house, with a heat fixture mounted on top - inside. This set up works great.
