First Ball Python

mystimel Dec 09, 2006 08:12 PM

I just went up to a reptile show today. There were some really awesome animals there, but I knew what I wanted before I went. I came home with a beautiful female ball python, and all the supplies that I need to take care of her. I got a custom ordered terrarium to fit perfectly on top of a shelf I have, great stuff! All in all I spent maybe 140 on everything. My boyfriend is giving me a spare bottom heater he has so that excluded. (I bought a dimmer for it at home depot) Not too bad for a college student's budget.
I'm just spreading all of the good news. As soon as I get a picture I'll post it up. She doesn't have any special genetic traits but that doesn't really matter to me. (nor can I afford it!)
Right now I'm keeping my new ball python in my other snake's enclosure (a baby western hognose) because it's roomy enough and it will stay closed. And for now my other snake is going in another terrarium that lacks a good lid. That's okay though since that snake isn't nearly long enough or strong enough to get to the top of that terrarium. (my western hog misses her burrowing, sani-chips are in the broken tank that she's in, but I gave her plenty of hides) She'll be back to burrowing on monday when my ball python's tank is ready.

My mother suggested I name my new girl Lucy... as in Lucille BALL... Is that too terribly cliche'? Other name suggestions would be appreciated!

Good luck with your new ball! i have ne reccomendations for a name.. I would just use BALL1F..

What i would reccomend is finding a container with a secure lid for your hognesed snake.. You don't want to learn the hard way that snakes can and will find their way out of anything that is not 100% secure..

My other reccomendation is that i should begin using spellcheck.. or at least re-read my posts prior to posting!

Again, good luck with her!

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have fun with her. ^_^ It's nice, now I have a taste of both worlds really. I have both a constricting snake and a technically venemous snake... Very different animals... I wish I had room or money for more though. Reptiles are so addictive...

No worries about my hognose. She's just a baby only 7 inches and the tank is 12 inches or so, normal tank height. She's not made for that kind of stretch upwards and even if she could she's not long enough :P

In any case I've only got 2 tanks availiable until I get my custom one on Monday. Best keep my ball in the only tank that has a working lid till then. It wouldn't be any fun at all to have a loose ball python in my room.... even less fun for my mom. She likes snakes, at a distance and in small doses. She didn't have much fun when I was younger and my pet rat got out. She woke up to find it in her face. Good morning Mom!

Congrats on the new ball, and if Lucy works for you, it works for me .

Congrat's on your first ball ( you'll have more to come)!!! They are such amazing snakes....

I agree with Quig, the first name that gets mentioned has to be. My first two snakes names are Joey and BoBo I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted.

Alright, so lucy doesn't really work, I think I'm gonna go with the name Cleopatra for her instead. Miss Cleo for short. ^_^
