Pacific Gopher

jerry Dec 10, 2006 10:49 AM

I find alot of gopher snakes on the road in the late summer. Sadly alot of DORs(dead on road). I ussually just stop & pull them off so they do not get hit. This one had kind off a neat diamond pattern behind the head, so I brought it home. Here is a pic from the night we found it. I will take another pic soon.
Also, I found a spot where the Gopher snakes all have white bellies...not spotting @ all. I thought at first they were glossy snakes. Anyone else ever see some like that?

Well it's been a long time since I collected them but from what I can recall I don't actually remember ever finding them with any marking on the belly. Now I may have just not been paying attention to the belly at the time but I had a couple of them that I caught for a long time and I do not remember them having belly markings.

Mine all had the more rounded or diamond blotch pattern that your picture shows but had a slightly more brown tinted background(still straw colored but with more brown tint) one of them even going to a reddish color towards the tail. All of mine were from the El Dorado County foothills which are between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe in California.

That's a great looking Pacific. I find them from the southern-most part of their range out in W. Lancaster, CA ( outskirts of L.A. County). Same as you I see quite a few road cruising during the summer months and unfortunately too many DORS as well.

The one pictured is from East Alameda county. I probly found close to 60 Pacific Gopher snakes this year, but this ones pattern really stuck out for me, saved it from becoming a DOR.

that is indeed a very unique looking pattern especially around the neck where it splits into two toward the head. I find great basinswhen i go camping in eastern washington in spring and summer and the look very different from the pacifics i see from cali. much more like bullsnakes found east of the rockies. anyways, great save!
