On a, probably, dumb question.

I don't own monitors yet, but have been reading in here for a while now. Are Bosc(Sav)monitors not bred in captivity because they are simply difficult to maintain because of them being wild caught, or is it some other reason, ie-lack of interest because other monitors are more of a challenge/interesting?

I can ill afford some of the more exotic or larger monitors, but it seems captive breeding savs would at least put healthier ones on the market and take 'some' of the strain off the importation of them. Curious in Michigan Any feed back would be appereciated.

Keeping and breeding all varanids from the smallest to the largest, is very expensive. For instance, it would be impossible to breed ackies and sell them for $5.00. You would lose money hand over fist.

To put it into prespective, imports come in at lower then that $5.00 figure. More prerspective, it would cost many times more to produce Savs, then ackies. So unless the government subsidises the breeding of Savs, or places limits on what they can be imported for, there is no way to compete. Remember, captives take work and support, wildcaught(farmbeans) are stolen from nature after nature did the work and provided the support. Cheers
