This was an awsome year for herping

onthefly Dec 10, 2006 06:29 PM

To start I got some new duties at work that let me traval though the SouthWest deserts of Califonia, Arizona and Nevada I had some great trips to the Palm desert area of Cal. where in the wild I saw Chuckwallas, Desert Iguanas, in one area I saw Fringe-toed Lizard tracks but no lizard, on a trip through Arizona I found an area that had so many Desert Iguanas, I don't thing 10 Min. went by between lizards, there were also a lot of Whiptails and Zebra-tailed Lizards in that area, on a trip from Phoenix(I was hoping to see some of those awsome looking red back Chuckwallas in the Phoenix but it was cloudy and rainy those two days) to Las vegas I found my faverite place on earth, it's a small town called Wikiup,(Eve that's where your lizards came from) it took me 12hr's to get from Wikinburg to Wikiup witch is only about 150 miles, I would find the perfect spot, go for a hike, 10 or 20 miles down the road would be the next perfect spot, and on and on, I missed my meating in vegas, car trouble(YEA RIGHT) on the way back I looked for snakes at night, I saw some snake road kill in the area, no luck, I crashed out in the car so I would be in the area in the morning, hoping to see some Collared lizards, again no luck, the area looked so good there has to be Collareds in that area, right Mr.Will wells, or am I in the wrong area. on a trip to Kern county I saw Leopard Lizards, Great Basin Collared Lizard (C. bicinctores) lots of Spiny lizards and Zebra-tailed Lizards and a Desert Tortoise, It was a good year for me with snakes,I saw lots of Rattle snakes, Gopher Snakes, some Cal. Kings A very nice Coastal rosy Boa(that came home with me) some Striped Racers and my Son found a Black Head snake on a herping trip we went on, now that's his faverate snake to look for.
We got some C. COLLARIS Collared lizards, one of them was gravid and with Eve's help we hatched all five eggs(thanks again Eve), we added two Chuckwallas to the collection (one wild cought, one captive bread). And now I'm looking forward to doing even more next year.

Always neat to hear of peoples field herping sights, sounds as if it was a really GOOD time Cecil.
My hubby probably will never take me on such a trip for fear of what I may bring home, OR that I may just run off with some handsome collared, hahahahhaaa, LMAO.

Seriously I enjoyed your story, interesting finds.... especially my 3 sticky lizards, you should post some pics of the Rosy boa that you found.

Oh , and you are making me feel like a collared mid-wife, helping to bring in more babys, . Hey I'm glad to be of service to such an awesome event, but the collareds, and incubator are the real hero's

Thanks again for my presents.

I will get some pics of Greer, it was hard to come up with a name for a male rosy Boa, not to many manly names with rosy in it, the only thing I came up with was Rosy Greer the football player, so Greer it was. Trevors black Head was let go back in its home, like always no camra, but here is a pic. of an adult Black Head

This was a great year for reptiles. I saw quite a few new species and got alot of photos. Check out the link below for photos of these reptiles. The area you mentioned that looked good for collareds probably does have collareds. It's just a matter of being there at the right time. Glad you had a great year and hope that it only gets better in 2007!
