Quick question about co-habitation.

Can you keep gold dust gecko's and pdf's in the same enclosure? I have kept both, but never together, just wondering if I should try it.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Tom,

I've seen it done before but I wouldn't recomend it for three reasons:

1) The large preffered temperature difference. A basking spot of 90F-95F would be too hot for most species of dart frogs and if the Phelsumas weren't provided with that hot of a basking temperature they wouldn't be able to digest their food properly.

2) The size difference of feeder insects. Although some larger darts like terribilis and large morphs of tinctorius will eat 1/4 inch and a little larger crickets most would preffer to eat the smaller 1/16 inch crickets. I only keep Phelsuma dubia but they grow to the same size as laticauda and so far mine haven't shown any interest in the small crickets I feed my darts.

3) Most gold dusts are wild caught and often arrive in bad shape. They could transmit a disease or foriegn parasite to the captive bred dart frogs that could be deadly.

Darts and day geckos would be best kept seperatly although I think if you chose an large species of dart frog like terribilis and made sure to keep the geckos and frogs in a very large terrarium it could work out. If the basking spot was a few feet up from the bottom of the terrarium you could probably keep the lower part in the high 70's for the darts with the warmer basking spot high enough where the dart frogs would rarely go. It would take a lot of time and planning though. The dart frogs would need to be raised to their adult size before being introduced with to the geckos (I'm sure an adult gold dust wouldn't hesitate to eat a small dart froglet) and the geckos would need to be quarantined for a few months and treated for parasites. All in all they are probably best kept seperatly. Good luck,

Thanks for the help. I'll stick with the darts.
