Gopher/corn cross

bigfoot Dec 10, 2006 08:42 PM

Brother & sister. The mother was gopher. The father was 3/4 corn, 1/4 gopher. Top is female. Bottom is male. The female laid a few huge eggs last spring about 3 times normal size. Only one had a shell and it failed to develop.

His mother was a Gopher/corn cross. She produced huge eggs, often without shells. Most failed to hatch. I got 3 babies from one clutch and 1 baby the next year.

From the same clutch.

She looks a lot like her father who was a wild caught corn snake from Cumberland Co., NC.

These males are brothers from the same clutch. The amelanistic one is much larger.

I kept it because it was so pretty, even if it wasn't growing any faster than a corn. All the snakes pictured behave like corns, incidentally, except the gopher snake and her daughter. The daughter has gopher snake behavior.

They're nice looking snakes. What are their dispositions like?

All the males pictured and the female labeled "Dad's sister" behave pretty much like corn snakes. They don't threaten or try to bite when removed from their cages. I don't remember them ever defecating when handled. The one labeled "Dad" above prefers live animals. The rest, females included, will eat frozen/thawed.

The gopher female and her daughter hiss and threaten when I open their cages. Once in hand, they're no problem as you see in this picture of the daughter. I expect they would defecate if handled for any lengh of time. Bull snakes will do that when they get tired of being handled.

I am fascinated by the heredity of the behaviors as much as the animals themselves. What did you breed the female in the first picture to? Was it necessary to trick the cross? I sure would like to see this forum used to share techniques and more posts like yours with the behavioral inheritance noted. Thanks for sharing.

Me: I mated her to her father. As I remember, they coupled shortly after I put them together. I wanted to mate her to the amelanistic male but he wasn't interested. All the successful matings I did last spring were one male and one female without trickery. The tricking I did try didn't work nor did I get any hybrid babies. The gopher didn't breed and the three clutches I got involving one or both hybrid parents went bad.

I have what I thought for the longest time was a crazy looking amelanistic corn snake, recently I have really started to notice differences in the way she eats, and looks, her scales dont appear to be keeled, but do feel very different than a corn snake, they feel like they would be keeled. I have also noticed her head is a little more slender than my other corns. She also isnt growing as fast as my other corns and is not a public eater like my corns? Think I have a hybrid? Also her pattern seems to fade toward the tail, as does my sunglow sonoran gopher...

Thanks Diego for the pics!
