breeding question

pythonchick1 Dec 11, 2006 09:21 AM

this is kind of a dumb question, but if you dont ask you'll never know right? i'm looking into breeding cornsnakes (i currently have 3 babies)and i see that corns sometimes lay double clutches. i'm also seeing info that alot of times the second cluth isnt as fertile. my question is, do the female corns store sperm when mating? i used to breed bearded dragons, and after just 1 mating my female would lay a couple of equally fertile cluthes, and i found out this is because they store sperm. just wondering if cornsnakes do that also.

yes, corns can store sperm. From what I hear, they can store it from one season to the next, if they chose.

they CAN store it.....but alot don't....that is why the second clutch is less fertile or all duds alot.......people don't breed for the second batch and the females lay them anyways

some won't double....some only double if bred a second time...some double and have good both times without the second breedings.....some lay duds both times (maybe they don't store sperm at all)......I have had one hybrid lay 3 batches and eat the whole time and they were all good without breeding for the second or third clutch.....

but as said.....most of my seconds are duds...I don't breed for them....I get lazy........

after first batch she will shed about 10 days later..feed her and breed her if she is well enough at this time.....
