What is the best soil for savs?
is the dirty kind
Decomposed granite ids the best substrate for savs. Not sure where or if you'll ever find it.
Are you talking about? As it comes in many grades and colors and mixes. Cheers
Whatever kind pro exotics uses. They seem to have found the best stuff, from what they say.
I think/hope if you ask Robyn he would explain, that the DG they recomend, is not the "best" its something that worked to an extent with their albigs. DG may work, but it surely is not the best.
I have been nesting monitors for a very long time, and I have no idea what is best. I do know a series of options to offer many types of monitors. I think this is very important to understand.
In otherwords, try thinking in terms of something that works, not the best or idea.
In that order, I am sure if used right, the DG Robyn recomends, will work. Cheers
on his site, that DG is not the "best" substrate, but more importantly that it meet all his particular needs for his particular monitors.
Maybe he didn't but thats what I got out of reading his site.
Perhaps he will chime in and clarify what is meant.
I think the word "Best" should be stricken from the monitor keepers handbook, if one such book exsisted.
Good Luck

i agree, "best" is a tough term to use accurately : )
the DG we brought in works all right, nesting could definitely be better, but for a soil that is ready to go, and could be delivered in a 60 ton quantity, that was our best CHOICE. best choice is very different from "best soil" : )
i need to update the soil FAQs, but basically, Chad was experimenting this spring and came up with a topsoil/DG/sand mix that is about 50/30/20 that is awfully nice. i am about to bring in another 50 tons of that and do a giant swap out for the animals we keep on soil (includes monitors, gilas, uros, and some snakes).
i could have gotten that mix done and delivered all along, but ya know, coulda woulda shoulda, sometimes you don't realize ALL of your options. the search for a great soil in great quantities is a continuous process.
what i want folks to take MOST from the soil FAQ is that it is important to evaluate and experiment in YOUR OWN situation...
what do i have available to me? for free? for purchase?
what am i trying to accomplish with my setup?
how does my soil choice react with different moisture levels?
does it work for the animals?
how well?
can i improve it now?
in a year, will i know enough to reevaluate and improve again?
stuff like that : )
