I don't know if it is neccesarily "Rare" But you don't really see them alot. He is a vary beautiful snake though your lucky to have stumbled upon him.

I just hatched out a clutch of 5 - one of them is very close to perfect banding, with only two half bands and no "Y" bands.

Here's a pic of my "almost perfect" neonate

Here are the clutchmates -

#5 is also close - but not quite.

I'm actually selectively breeding for the opposite - in that my holdbacks are going to be the ones with the most half bands - I'm hoping a tendency for it is genetic, and that I can someday produce a neonate that does not have a single complete band from snout to vent.

In my opinion it's rare. I started noticing about 2 years ago when someone brought it up on the forums and since then I can only recall one post on the feild herpers forum and one post on the classifieds. The field herpers post had a pic of a wild caught one from the Santa Cruz area and the guy said it was only the second one he'd ever found out of many. The advertizement I only vaguely remember but I think the guy had a group of babies and a couple were perfect banded. Other than that I can't remember seeing any in any ads or even at any shows in California.
I have also found quite a few Cal Kings in the wild and I can't remember any perfect ones. Several had only one or two broken bands or Y's but no perfect ones that I can recall. I think perfect zonatas and perfect pyros are way more common.
