Hibernation question

Sinster Dec 12, 2006 06:25 AM

If it's above hibernation temperature will a box turtle hibernate. Right it's about 66 F and our ornate is hibernating. I thought they went into hibernation when the temperature changed.

Air temperature is not the only thing that triggers hibernation: day length has an effect too. One day of mild weather probably wouldn't be enough to coax a turtle out.

In its hibernaculum, temperatures are quite steady as compared to air temperatures, so your turtle is probably not experiencing that 66 degrees, but rather something cooler. If the air temprature stays warm for a few days, that could change.

On occasion, I will see one of my easterns up and about during the winter months, but usually only if there has been a warm spell (at least 3 days at or above 70 or so), so I do watch the weather.
