Thermostat questions...

AggieCS_31 Aug 08, 2003 11:03 AM

I recently completed my new BP cage and now I'm trying to adjust my temperatures correctly. I've never used a thermostat in his old enclosure, but the temps were all perfect. Whats the best thermostat(affordable) that I could get to control a UTH, incandescent fixture, and a basking spot lamp? Like I said, I'm new to temp. control but not to BP's, so I don't know exactly what to expect.

...Helix Controls makes the best thermostats, but they're not the cheapest.
Some basic rule-of-thumbs about thermostats: They're best for regulating a surface temp, such as a heating pad under the cage; they're less effective in regulating a 3-dimensional space such as produced by a basking light.
My rec: use one to control the heat pad and use relatively low wattage bulbs in the basking fixtures, especially if you elect to use more than 1 fixture (don't know why you would want to). Leave the pad on 24h and put the basking fixture on a timer set for 12h. Keep an eye on the humidity especially arounf the shed period. Good luck. Scott J. Michaels DVM
