help! ways to teach 140 kids about herps

IcyWolf Dec 13, 2006 02:30 PM

ok so, a few years ago i started organizing something called Third Dimension Reptiles. Long story short, it's an educational outreach program aimed at teaching kids about reptiles and giving them ability to respect them just like any living thing should be. so now, here it is wednesday and on monday i have my first shows. i'm doing three of them for about 140 3rd graders. so you can imagine how many kids their will be in each one. i have it pretty well planned out, but i also know how well things can go according to plan, lol. so pretty much i am asking for any suggestions on how to handle things, especially anything that might not go as smoothly as planned. so far i plan on taking, 2 green igs(about 4 ft., very friendly), a sudan plated lizard, a beardie, a leopard gecko, green anoles, cuban knight anole(definately a look dont touch herp for them!), golden geckos, longtail lizard, 2 baby balls, 1 adult ball(het. albino), a gulf hammock ratsnake, an eastern kingsnake, a baby cali king(albino striped), gold treefrogs, and an eastern painted turtle. oh and i have app. 45 minutes but i was told more time wouldnt be a problem. any suggestions on how to get all these herps into a '92 geo storm would also be appreciated lol. sorry for such a long post, i am just quite nervous about it (more excited really). thanks for any suggestions!

I just took 2 of my balls and two of my bearded dragons to my sons 5th grade science class. I had the most awsome time. The kids were great and the animales were great. The kids asked a ton of ? I was thier for a hour and a half. I used sterlites with a locking lid, I made holes in them and they stack on top of each other great. I would love to do it again. there were kids that were afraid of the snakes and by the end every kids held one of the babies. Best of luck Let us know of it goes.. Melinda

No offense, but if you're dealing with just 3rd graders I think maybe you should cut back on the amount of critters you'll be haulin' around. It may wind up to be more work than it's worth.

I realize you'll have time to fill and that many reptiles would certainly do that, but you could probably do just as well with half a dozen reps. You'll be able to cover the info of each more thoroughly and there will CERTAINLY be many more questions asked of you than you can imagine . That many children will keep you quite busy.

For three years running I took either an iguana or a ball python to my boys' class at the local elementary school for "pet day." Inevetibly(sp) I wound up going from there to another class room or two for repeat performances. Makes for a long day. Was a great experience for most of the kids, and some of the teachers. Although I did run into a number of kids that were absolutely petrified of snakes. After the sessions most of them came round.

How ever you do this I hope you enjoy it

Can I come? That sounds like it would be so much fun. When I move out of this place and get a larger collection, I hope to do something like that too. Assemblies like yours are one of the reasons I love herps sp much today ^_^

While my kids were in elementry school I was asked every year by the science teacher to bring my snakes to the school to help educate the students about reptiles. This would usually be an all day affair that would include a few hundred kids.

One night I got a phone call from one the of the parents asking how much I would charge to bring my snakes to their son's birthday party. I had been doing it for so many years for free It never dawned on me that someone might actually be interested in paying me for having fun at some elses birthday party.

To make a long story short birthday parties have funded many of my breeding projects.

I can't tell you how much I fun I've had asnwering questions and working with the kids and parents to help them feel more comfortable with the snakes.

I have recently added a page to my website advertising that do birthday parties. The response has been overwhelming.

Something to think about.

Have a Great Christmas Everyone.
