Recurrent RI?

senorsnake Dec 13, 2006 02:53 PM

We have one snake that has had RIs on and off since we've gotten her (had one when she arrived, too), and we've never had another animal with an RI, let alone one that is a repeat offender. Temps and humidity have always been correct. Is there anything that can be done to help ensure that she won't have another reoccurance? (She has one now, we have a vet. appointment for tomorrow). Or are some animals just prone?

I had the same problem with a Boa i bought a couple of years ago. It would go away, and come back. The R.I. interupted her breeding last year. At that point I had had enough. Here is a great read that Jeff Ronne started about Tylan and R.I.'s:http://www.boaconstrictor.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5124

I used some Tylosin I think it was called. Same thing as Tylan. That thread talks about it.
Anyways, the R.I totally cleared up.
The same female is being bred right now. The night time temps sometimes drop to 75f and she's healthy! Good stuff!

Thanks for the info! Last time we took her to the vet he prescribed tylan injections every 3 days (after doing bloodwork), kept her clear for 5 months. This one hit in the middle of breeding season too, luckily the males hadn't shown much interest in her, so we're quite positive she hasn't been bred and don't have to worry about the effects of the future injections on the young.

I have read that a vitamin A deficiency makes vertebrates more prone to respiratory diseases than normal. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether that is part of the problem. I'm suggesting it because an ovulating snake would have greater nutritional needs than a nonbreeder. Good luck.

You say your temps and humidity are "correct"
What would they/that be ?

If people would "STOP" treating BCI,BCC like "tropical" reptiles
there would be far less RI and other related issues.
Why the need for 60-70% humidity levels ?Why do people think they need daily misting on top of that as well ......LOL!!Where does that kind of info come from ?
