A bad day ~ I need moral support

Tektum Dec 13, 2006 04:21 PM

So I picked up the want ads yesterday and I saw advertised an albino Common Snapper (about the size of two adult hands) $75.00 or best offer! So I of course called immediately. I got this older womans machine and she said, please keep calling, I am un able to make calls out unless its the weekend. I must have called this woman 50 times, leaving messages etc. Finally, later on today, the message is changed and it says the turtle has been sold! uugh! Man, I felt like crap!
I called her back later (trying to dig around on where it may have been found, because she is local) and she said that she was given the turtle a couple of years ago and had no idea where it came from anyway, had to vent! Thanks, Leo

how much would a turtle like that normally go for Leo? it sure would have been good for one of your exhibits.

Hey Steve ~ I'm not sure what the turtle would be worth on the market, they are not bred in captivity (that I know about) so, that would make it more valuable ~ noteably to someone that is really into Snapping Turtles. I would have paid alot more for it. As far as my shows go, I could use it, but my primary interest is growing it up and breeding it. Something I know I would have no trouble doing living here in the North East. I guess there was one offered for sale on Kingsnake Classifieds a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't see it. That figures lol Thanks, Leo

I wonder why there are no albino snappers bred like there is in redear sliders? Seems strange. Maybe its just because there are more sliders bred. Anyways an adult ally or common snapper would be an awesome animal and probably "priceless". But being albino would greatly decrease the chance of its survival in the wild. Blending in to their surroundings is their livelyhood.

A number of years ago I had seen in the same want ads, that someone within a half hour of me was selling an albino Snapping turtle for $40.00. I was pretty young at the time and didn't have the money lol But intrestingly, several years later, I had met someone that worked for the Boston Museum of Science and I was fortunate enough to have been able to give a private tour of the downstairs facility - not seen by the public.
They had tons of animals that never even make it on display, animlas that people just have dropped off there over the years. Anyway, they had a big adult snapping turtle swimming in this large opaque tub. I remember it being more white (with some brown in the carapace ~ likely leucistic) no one seemed to know the origins of the turtle. I always wondered if it was the individual that was for sale for $40.00.
Every now and then a customer will tell a tale of an albino Snapper, but i've yet to find one myself...Thanks, Leo

albino snappers are being captive breed. and actually albino snappers do have a great chance of living in the wild compaired to others. for the fact that they are aggresive and nocturnal. there are about 1 or 2 albino snappers found a year.
the going rrice for albino snappers is about 3000 or more

very nice looking yellow coloration. there was a hatchling ally snapper with the same yellow color on ks that went for 4500(alot of money for something a fragil as a hatchling) several months ago. but it had black eyes. leucistic? thanks for the pics and information. steve

SteveH Dec 16, 2006 01:08 AM

heres a pic of yellow shelled leucistics. but they're not albino cause they dont have pink eyes. i've never seen an albino ally, but a guess they could exist.

Thats great info ~ glad to hear that they are being captive bred. Its true that everytime one is offered in the local want ads or I hear of someone local finding one, its already well started or at an adult size. I would say more than anything else, their success rate in nature is probably due to the fact that they're nocturnal and hide very well during the day. Not to mention being aquatic, the minerals and algae that collect on their shells are good camo. I'll show you guys the ad that I found in the paper when I get the chance. Thanks, Leo

If you ask me its a joke, I asked how they know they are het. I was replied stating out of 30 (it may have been 40)I think they said 3-4 had longer tails with white on thier legs. not sure why anyone whould think tail length would have anything to do with it. I replied stating if anything it sounds like pied snappers.

Well I emailed him about the Het, I asked if he had pictures of any albino Alligator snapper, as I've never seen one. He emailed me saying he would send pics and never did. Personally I think hes full of it and just tryin to make 300 off a reg snapper. I got my Hypo common snapper which I am going to breed to an albino snapper. SUNGLOWS!!!!!
