Iguana and Bearded help

naenaechan Dec 13, 2006 08:05 PM

My boyfriend has wanted an iguana for five or six years now and for the past few days i've drilled him constantly if he's super serious because that what I want to get him for x-mas IF he's serious and will build a cage and everything. He says he is, so I trust him cuz lets face it, he's not a TYPICAL guy.... surprising. Before we get him/her (preferably her) I will have my boyfriend make the cage so I know he's dedicated.

My question is not "should I do this" so dont grill me on that. My question is can a baby iguana go in with my 7 month old bearded dragon? Or will they fight since they ARE two seperate species with two drastically different needs? It wouldn't be a life-long thing UNLESS they liked eachothers company... which I doubt.

Some help please? Thanks.

-Nae

NO! These animals must be housed separately.

Ok thank you VERY much. I'm going to be getting another beardie and an iguana soon and this helped me out a lot because now I know I have to build two tanks... (My one isn't large enough by space on the bottom, its a 45 tall)

I have iguanas and bearded dragons too, and it is funny to watch them interact with each other. THey both know they are lizards and they head bob each other.

Also, the male iguana is always interested when the female beardies are in egg season.

that is a riot watching the interaction. I know with our Beardie he seems to get intimidated after a little while and goes into his hide. For that reason we keep a divider between the two.

Sounds like you are going to house them apart. Great. If you have any questions about that, go back and read your original post. You said:

"since they ARE two seperate species with two drastically different needs"

You answered your own question. What does fighting have to do with anything? Beardies are desert terrestrial critters. Green Iguanas are tropical aboreal critters. Chances are they wouldn't fight because one is too sick to put up a fight due to the wrong environment.

Read the care sheets here. Go find ICFS (http://www.anapsid.org/) and read it. Pick up a good book (by Melissa Kaplan or James W. Hatfield III) and read it. (Get the theme here?) Do this BEFORE you even start building the cage.

And please... check the shelters, pounds, and rescue orgs before running to the store and buying a baby. There are plenty of unwanted igs out there if you have a little patience and put in some effort.

No animal should be disposable, but too many are.
