Feeding probs after shed. Please help!

jdheff82 Dec 13, 2006 08:49 PM

She hasn't eaten for like 3 weeks now. She refused at the beginning of shed and she's refused after she's shed. She seems interested in the food, flicks her tongue and all. even follows it around the cage. But she turns her head away after a while and even runs from. She's about 15" in length now. She has eaten 1 fuzzy and that was a few weeks ago. Is it possible the food is too big. She seemed to be hungry still after eating pinkies, so I moved up. The first fuzzy I fed her, she accepted within seconds. Am i doing something wrong? The only real difference is the substrate. I changed from repti-bark to aspen bedding due to the possible dangers of fir bark.

She's prolly a good half inch thick and close to 15" if not a little longer.

Thanks in advance.

my first step would be to check temps. Then try the size food she was accepting.

The tank does stay a little cooler at my new place then where it was. The UTH doesn't do a very good job keeping the warm side warm at all. Any sort of cool air that gets in there and the temps drop. Can I add another UTH to the side of the tank on the warm side? If so, I'll add another to the back side of the tank. I have a night lamp that shines in the back side of the tank and it heats the water to add humidity to the air. This is also on the warm side. The warm side stays around 82 to 83 degrees.

Like I mentioned in the 1st post, I fed her a fuzzy and she ate it. Took her almost half an hour or so to get it down, but she did it.

One last thing, how do you all feed your snakes with aspen bedding and not get it all over the food? I don't want to feed her outside her tank.

Thanks for the help!

I am thinking that if it took the snake that long to get it down, it might be too big for her. I prefer to give smaller meals more frequently than big meals less frequentlty. You usually dont want to give a meal that is bigger than one and a half the size of the thickest section of the snake. If you must feed inside the cage with aspen, put the mouse on a sheet of paper or paper towel.
I would not heat both ends with an UTH, but put the water dish on the cool end and add a heat lamp to the warm end, if the temps are not correct.
Good luck
