Thinking about getting a Savannah

agrrlandherguy Aug 08, 2003 11:44 AM

Can anyone here help me out? I am thinking about getting a Savannah Monitor and I am new to them. I need to know how big they get, their temperment, are they good for first time monitor owners, how big of a cage they need, ect. If anyone has pics of their enclosures as well I would really appreciate it. I would hate to get one and then realize I cannot keep it properly. Also do they not like cats? I have a bunch of other reptiles, and my cats tolerate them and are really good with them, but from what I hear about monitors, Im more afraid for my cat than vice versa.

Any help you guys can give me would be so much appreciated. Thanks!

didnt mean to come off as rude. but this isnt the monitor forum. was just telling him/her to go to the right one. as far as Taz's pics. my dads digital camera broke, so i cant take photos. he's supposed to get a new one soon. though hes been saying soon for around 6 months
i can post the last ones i took of him. i guess hes like 4'3" in those photos or around there. i havnt measured him in a long time. though hes longer than my blackthroat and my BT is atleast 4'4-5"
ill post my latest ones of him.
i would guess Taz grows less than an inch a month now. hes still filling out though.

Tegus and monitors are sometimes mistaken for eachother but they are different lizards, and each has their own forum here on kingsnake. I see you've started receiving replies in the monitor forum. Hope you're able to find the info you need. Also checkout the FAQ here:

Hope your rescue ameiva is doing better.

I realized after I posted that I was on the wrong forum. I am usually on here because of the, as you said it, rescued ameiva. (who is doing great by the way! eating like a pig, but I won't complain because after being starved so badly I think she deserves it! )

I know that the monitors and Tegus get confused, I am actually going through the same delimma. I am researching on whether I want a monitor or a Tegu and everyone I talk to has a different opinion.

Ah yes, the tegu vs monitor dilemma. I like the Savannah's look, too. Very Jurassic Park. Hmmm, you could get a monitor AND a tegu.

Glad to hear the ameiva is doing better! Hope she grows into a nice plump, spoiled lizard.

I could get both.... hummmmm

I'm so much happier for the Ameiva as well. When I first got her she wouldn't even run when you picked her up, no energy. Now that speedy little thing is climbing and running all over the place. I can't catch her, but at least she is now getting enough food to give her the energy she needs!
