Digging and no appetite - concerned

Geckjo Dec 14, 2006 08:41 AM

I have a leopard gecko - Red Clay (Claiborne). She has been digging a lot in her cage for the past 5 days. I find this unusual because with my first leopard gecko - she has never done this. Claiborne hasn't eaten for the past 5 days, too. I'm concerned.

I bought her 1 1/2 months ago at a reptile show in South Carolina. And if she was bought gravid, than the eggs would have hatched already, I believe - So I don't think that's a concern. Maybe she's due to shed and has no appetite - that's happened before with her.

I also wanted to share a pix of Claiborne - hopefully this goes through. I'm new on this forum

Check her belly, hold her up and look though with her backlit. It sounds strange to have bought a gravid gecko at a show, but she is exhibiting clear signs of wanting to lay IMHO. Digging and no appetite in an otherwise healthy gecko are usually evidence of wanting to lay. Check her with the light and report back to us. Also give her some moist moss or the like for her to dig in, you may have a surprise! (Also, although I haven't seen it personally, female geckos are reported to lay infertile eggs without exposure to a male, usually just one egg and it is typically underdeveloped.)

Let us know.

www.leopardgeckobreeder.com/ovulation.html Check out the image on my site, that shows a gravid female. She sounds very much like she's gravid. And what do you mean that the eggs would have "hatched" in 1.5 months if she was gravid? Did you mean laid? A female can lay eggs anywere from 2-6 weeks after she developes the follicles, sometimes longer. And a female doesn't have to be bred to lay eggs, so will lay them even if they are virgins.
