sexing Pacman frogs question

eelnoob Dec 14, 2006 10:14 AM

I read that only males would develope a black beard/patch around the chin area. My question is at what size do they usually develope this feature?

Thanks in Advance

Yeah usually they develop a black motling colouration on their "chin". I wouldn't say beard because that gives the impression of hair which is not the case. They usually get the black colouration after a few months to a year of age. I have some that have always had the colouration ever since there were not much bigger than a quarter. I also have a female with the dark chin, so I wouldn't say that this is fault proof method of determining sex.

Thanks for the response

Yikes just found out that there's a few different species being sold/called as Pacman frogs.

Ceratophrys cornuta

Ceratophrys aurita

Ceratophrys ornata

So I'm guessing the ones at the petstores are probably a hybrid?

Pacman frog is a "petstore" common name. The proper name is horned frog. There are about 7 or so species and generally most of the ones in the pet trade are C. cornuta, followed by C. ornata. The only hybrid I know of is a cross between cornuta and ornata and it is called a "Fantasy" horned frog. These hybrids are sterile and are characterized by being either bright orange or bright green. I have an orange male.

Actually, C. cornuta is still quite rare in the pet trade. Although, I have noticed that they are becoming more available the past couple of years. Definitely C. cranwelli is the most common of the horned frogs offered at pet stores.

Oh crap you are right, it is C. cranwelli that is the most common. My bad.
