Burrowing into the bark, normal?

map87 Dec 14, 2006 12:32 PM

I have noticed that lately my two bigger geckos seem to be burrowing into the bark a lot during the day. The two smaller ones stick to the branches and plants, but is it normal for the other two to be burrowed in the bark? I thought these geckos were arboreal?

Do you have any hides available? They do like to sleep in nice warm dark places during the day, if they have gotten too big to hide behind leaves, they may be trying the next best thing. Our little girl likes to hang out in an plastic orange (orange the fruit, I thought it was funny when I bought it) that we offer. It was originally intended for hamsters I think, but anything that can handle the humidity will work. Basically, they are looking for shelter most likely. The other possibility is humidity. They could be looking for a wetter environment. Check you humidity levels.

All geckos, no matter what species should be offered a hide or two for comfort. If all temps and humidity look good, I'd start there. Good luck.

They have plenty of hides, and my humidity is between 70 and 80 percent. Maybe they just like it under the bark?

I have four adult cresteds, and they each have their own favourite sleeping spot in their tanks. While three of the cresteds sleep in the various plants provided (and there are plenty), one male enjoys sleeping on the ground. They each have their own tank with plenty of hides, but his preference seems to be under some leaves on the bottom of the tank. As long as they have lots of hides and are eating well, I wouldn't be concerned. Maybe they just like it there! =)

Another possibility is that the two larger geckos are females.
You indicated you have 4 geckos in the enclosure. Have you noticed any aggression? With 4 you may have a couple of males. Males really don't get along very well and may eventually need to be seperated.
Anyway, if you have females in the enclosure (my guess) and they are at least 35 grams (about palm size) they could be digging to lay eggs! You may have an unexpected early Christmas present coming in the next few days.
What are they digging in? Is it moss? Do you know how to incubate the eggs?

Let us know if you have questions.
