Shipping question???

Shadylady Dec 14, 2006 02:30 PM

I have to ship an adult corn snake next week and I'm really nervous about it because I shipped out a snake earlier this week that arrived dead. That DOA snake was a white-lipped python and I'm pretty sure he stressed out. Still, it made me really paranoid.

Any advice would really be appreciated.

what part of the country...to and from?
Temperatures at both are very important.
Are you sure the python died due to stress and not temperatures or improper packaging?
Maybe a stupid question but if you hung around these forums as long as I have you would understand why I am asking it...Did you ship overnight?
Do you ship in styrafoam lined boxes?
Do you use heat packs?
These things are serious considerations when shipping animals especially in winter.

Yes, I read the shipping forum, and thank you.

The python went from N. Fla. to the Chicago area overnight, arrived 10:00 am. He was bagged and boxed with styrofoam insulation crumpled newspaper and heat packs. He was still warm when he arrived, just very dead. I'm sure it wasn't my packing, but it was very upsetting nevertheless.

I'm fond of the cornsnake so I'm just a bit paranoid about mailing her.

Thanks for your replies.

I hope you didn't feel I was insinuating it was your fault.
I was just running through the possibilities.
Is it possible it got too warm in the box.
I shipped a snake once expecting severe cold so I put a couple of 40 hour heat packs in the box.
The temps didn't drop as low as expected, the package was delayed for five hours and the snake died. Maybe too hot?
Packaged too well maybe?
It will definitely make you paranoid.
I have shipped many many times since then and still worry with every shipment.
Just make sure of the temps and package accordingly and I bet all will go well.
The last time was probably just one of THOSE things.
You know what I mean?

Ive worked for carriers and this is the absolute worst time to try shipping anything alive.I would ask the customer if they could hold off till the second week of Jan weather permitting. You have to make the call.
You said your from Florida. What would the temps be inside the box if it's 80-85 there?Your python may have been overheated on top of being poorly handled.
