New Guy...Tell me what u think

MRGerbik Dec 14, 2006 09:04 PM

I have a 20 gallon tank that currently houses 2 firebelly pirhanas. They are getting to be a little too big and are getting kind of territorial. There used to be 3 of them but the other 2 killed the smaller one. I dont have the resources to invest in a huge tank to house them so i figured i can sell them to a local fish store.

So now i have a nice 20 gallon tank on my hands. And it just so happens that a reptile/amphibian show is coming to White plains NY in January (im from NJ). I figured i pick up two dart frogs to put in this tank. Maybe more? I would like to build a nice water feature but it is confusing to me. I dont really get how it works to install the pump and all. And how do you run the power cord out of the tank without Frogs and fruit flies escaping?

I used to keep Jackson's chameleons and had a fake waterfall for their water. i dont want to use the fake waterfall since it would be cooler to build my own river/waterfall type thing , but i was wondering if i could use the pump out of it? Here is the link for the waterfall that the pump would come out of.

Speaking of blackjungle.com Do any of you have any experiance with this site? They seem a little expensive when it comes to purchasing frogs. I would like a site to fall back on if the Reptile Show does not have what i am looking for. Though the show always has lower prices. What do you think about this starter kit price wise?

Final question. Any recommendations on species for a 20gallon? As i said i kept chameleons and am no stranger to tempermental and going to extreme degrees to creat the perfect enviorment.

Ok thats enough already. good Luck and thank you to whoever decides to answer my questions

I spent about an hour sorting out your questions and attempting to answer them one by one in some detail. Then when I punched the submit button, it all disappeared. I'm not up to repeating this right now, except Black Jungle is OK, you can trust them, and the prices are competitive, not high. If you don't get a better answer for your other questions in the meantime, I'll try to get to it again in the morning.

I really appreciate the time you spent on advice. Ive noticed this board is not as active as the chameleon board, but thats ok. No need to spend an hour, unless you're really up for it

Thanks in advance

the first thing you need to consider is whether or not you are actually going to keep these pets, why did you buy the fish if you were just going to give them away, it's really not fair to them. leucs, auratus, and tincs are all hardy darts. i keep leucs and autarus's. i wouldn't start with any kind of thimbnail frog. if you have any specific questions i would be glad to help.

I got rid of the fish because they got too big for their enclosure and became very territorial. They killed one of their school. Considering i could not afford a 100 gallon tank to eventually house them i figured it would only be humane to give them uo before they kill each other. My pirhanas were never sick or uncared (in fact the aqaurium i turned them over to commented on how nice and healthy they were.) for so suggesting that i could not care for these frogs is kinda unfounded.

Dart frogs do not grow many times their original size and do not eat one another. I have also kept chameleons for a long time so i am sure i am capable of handling an exotic animal.

uhhh, i posted like a page of stuff and the same thing happened, it didn't work. that sucks! what i meant was that you should have thought about how big the fish were going to get b4 u bought them, but just don't do the same thing w/ darts.

20 gallon is good 4 anything, and here's some sites to answer the questions you had. i answered them, but they were long and i don't want to type them again.
