Another CRB Update

coluberking25 Dec 15, 2006 03:39 PM

Well I just got the hygrometer today. I put it in like 20 minutes ago and it's literally just past 70% as of now. Is this OK for Colombian rainbows? I've had various opinions for this. My NERD caresheet recommends between 50 and 60%, but someone here recommended between 50 and 70%. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Scott,
....IMO 50% to 70% would be ideal for a CRB. If you end up with humidity above 70% just wait a day or two and it will come down. If the humidity in your cage varied between 40% and 90% over a one week period that would actually be okay. I use clay flowerpots as hiding spots in my cages. I soak them about once a week. After they are soaked the humidity inside them is probably above 90% for a couple of days. A few days after that if the snakes do not spill the water from their water bowl the cage humidity is often down in the 40% to 50% range. If the cage has humidity above 90% all the time it will grow mold and mildew very very quickly. If the humidity is below 40% all the time adult Rainbow Boas will have shedding problems. Little Rainbow Boas can develop more serious problems with humidity below 50% all the time.

Sounds like you are almost all the way there. You just need to figure how to maintain your humidity without soaking the moss. I use 3/8 thick acrylic for the top of my vivariums, I know it cost about $30 for my 13.5 x 30 top for my 20 long and I able to maintain about 80-90 very easily with no water added just by controlling the ventilation. I also keep brb's as opposed to crb's (but keeping humidity is the same). I only use acrylic so it doesn't take the beuaty away from your environment, that's why and your enclosure looks nice btw. Since your room is cold, if your top is not covered, then the heat instead of building up is just lost leaving you with them 60 degree temps. I use a uv light slimline fixture to act as a daytime high for me which measures 78-79 as a high right now and I live in Southern Louisiana. Very important to have your probe secured too. You don't want to have to replace it real soon which in return, your prop. thermostat will not even be functionable in the mean time until you get a replacement probe.

Yea I have a piece of glass I use to cover half of the terrarium because the piece is too small. The other half is covered with a rag towel. Humidity is fine, and the probe is now saying the ground temp is in the low 80s, which I understand is a swell thing.
