help deciding on new gtp

pythonsmile Dec 15, 2006 04:01 PM

hello, i currently have one jayapura green tree python. he or she was born on may 1st. i was wondering if it is OK to keep two of gtps in the same cage though... i want to get one more. also i was wondering is there was a way to find the sex on the new one im about to get and the one i have? also, what is a good breeder to get one from in the 300 to $400 price range? let me know, thanks.

p.s. i have heard mixed opinions on whether its ok or not to hold baby gtps... what are the reasons it would not be ok? thanks again.

In my opinion, you should not house them together for several reasons: 1. they could end up fighting and injuring on another, 2. feeding could become a nightmare in that they may both go for the same prey, and 3. if one becomes sick, theres a good chance you are going to need to treat both animals. You say you have heard mixed responses? I have never heard of any reputable breeder housing animals together unless they are breeding them.

As for a quality animal for the price range you stated, try this link. Scott is running a holiday special at $400 shipped.

Babies should not be sexed until they are 1 year old or at least 100 grams. I wouldn't get yours sexed until then. You risk injuring the spine if you do it too soon. The only way to get one already sexed is to purchase a yearling. But they will usually run you more than $300

hey, the main question that i was saying i have mixed feedback on, was whether or not you could handle neonates...? thanks

I think most avoid holding neonates due to the fragile nature of their spines. When I photograph them, I just remove the perch and I don't move them. If they come off on their own, that's fine. Usually at that time, I'll weigh and take a photo to measure them. If you are gentle it shouldn't hurt them. I had Fuego out to help get off a bad shed a few weeks ago. S/he was fine about it. Wouldn't do it with my Biak though. Nasty little bugger!
