new girlfriend for Alfie? PLEASE HELP!

killr_silhouette Dec 15, 2006 06:33 PM

okay...so a few years ago i bought 2 leopard geckos, an albino female and a normal male...

last year the female passed away after being brought back from the brink a few times by forcefeeding & many supplements...

Alfie (the male) really loved his girl, and now that she's gone, he seems much more sluggish and lonely...

my question is should i get him a new girlfriend?...or will he fight with her...also, should i only give him a female...or would a male be okay too?...and should i get an adult, or could i get a larger baby?

thanks so much,
jessica

Several things: If you intend to house them together, another male is a recipe for one of them dead and the other injured. They will fight. Also it is generally bad to mix sizes of geckos in one enclosure. The bigger one will usually dominate the smaller, stressing the smaller one and most likely preventing the smaller from getting enough food. If you get another female, get several. One male with one female will most likely stress that female severely by constantly trying to breed with her. If you get several females, be prepared to find homes for all the babies you will produce and for the fact that you'll probably need a larger terrarium for them all to live in. In short, you're probably best off letting him be by himself. If you do decide to add geckos to your collection, remember to quarantine them for at least a month (and preferably more like 2) before introducing them to your current guy - you want to find out if they have parasites/diseases *before* putting them together, not after. Finally, please don't kiss your reptiles, they can have salmonella on their skin, which does no harm to them, but I'm sure you're familiar with how salmonella is the reason you don't eat raw chicken...

i would definately get alfie a new girlfriend. it depends though, was alfie the traditional type leo or more updated(so to speak),was he a one partner leo or could he live contently with several girls? if he's the one partener type get him a bigger juvinlie female(just about tha breeding age). if the other works for him get him a female that has had a few cluthes, and after they seem to get board with one another, get another experianced female, and so on up to 6 or 7 females. maybe more depending on alfie.
