mulberry silkworms

alreynolds2003 Aug 08, 2003 12:32 PM

i got a 8 in cham now, 3 months old, lets say i get some silkworms from mulberry - 1000 for 10.00 than i get some chow, but i want to get a deal, so i go with 4 lbs for 49.95 and im saving $10 b/c a 2 lb. bag costs $30. k so i got 4 lbs of silkworm food to feed 1000 silkworms. i only need 1 lb. to feed them to a decent size. so i figured i got enough for the next 3 batches of 1000 silkworms that i get. shipping and handling costs 15.00 = 75.00 for 1000 silkworms and enough food to feed 4000, BUT the minimum purchase has to be 30.00 - so does anyone know where i can just buy silkworm eggs for just as cheap as they have them without having to have a minimum purchase b/c if i make this purchase now, there is no way i'm going to want to just buy 30.00 worth of silkworms (6,000 eaten by 1 cham in the total silkworm life span before they morph? right...) or is there any other way to get good deals on them

they have the cheapest silkies that i have found. you can try ordering them in a cold pack, so that you can keep them in the fridge. that's what i have been doing. there is also a way to keep them around for longer by feeding them just enough to survive, and not enough to grow. i've seen silkies kept around for over 6 weeks.

You might consider sharing with a fellow cham keeper.

If you get 2000 eggs with your first order (the eggs and chow), you can split the order. The next time, you can just split the eggs, as you still have chow.

We order 10,000 eggs at a time, keep some cool, and start the new batches 2 weeks apart. We order the chow in bulk so as to always have some on hand. We always share with our cham friends...

Just a thought.

and here's a site for good basic info www.pclaunch.com/~kayton/silk.htm

keep in mind that once you start rearing your own (if you plan to) you don't need many to get started.

They usually get to me in good shape and they are fed leaves only but you can convert them to eat chow by removing all leaves and stems.
