Box turtles eaing mushrooms

jack Dec 16, 2006 11:57 AM

My box turtls love mushrooms. There favorite is one that is red on top and pure white on the bottom, with gills. But they also eat mushrooms that are light brown on the top and white on the bottom with gills. The red ones are the hardest to find. The light brown ones are more common in NJ were I live. This type grows mostly under oak trees. Once you know were the oak trees are, its not to hard to find them when it rains.

Great pics! I have yet to find any mushrooms around here that my boxies will eat! There are all kinds of them around, so I'll just have to keep trying I guess!

Jack, great photos! Looks like they are eating Rose russula. It is one of the mushrooms listed in some of the literature I've read that box turtles will readily eat.
