err sort of strange breeding question

kg May 20, 2003 08:02 PM

A guy I know wants to breed his female (when he gets one) and he wants my Hobbes to "do the deed". I don't want to sell him, so would it be ok if he brings over his female, introduces her to Hobbes, breeds her at my house, and takes her back to his house? How long would it take for them to breed? thanks

First dont put the female in the males cage because males can be somewhat territorial. You might want to yuse a different cage or put yours in the females. Before you put them in the cage introduce them on the floor. Then you just have t watch until its done and you can take the male out. It really depends on the lizard for how long it will take.

Actually I have the most success in introducing the males to the females on the floor. And letting the deed happen right there. No staying together in anyones cage.

for them to do the deed? I was planning to introduce them on the floor of my room, that way we could quickly pull them apart if it toes and tails start flying. Does brumating your dragon increase fertility or something? The guy wants me to brumate Hobbes, but I don't want to. just want to know if it'll help.

I think males will just do the deed without brumating. I do not think that females will develop eggs without brumating, unless it is their first breeding year. How long it takes all depends. Sometimes you put two dragons together and bang two minutes later breeding has occured. Sometimes the girls aren't into it, sometimes the boys lose interest. The males are kinda funny, I really think mine have ADD. They will grab the female get on top of her and then they see other females or the iguana or a cricket and lose the desire to breed. So it could happen right away or it could take several visits. The less stuff around the better.

Brumating is a good idea when breeding reptiles that naturally brumate... there is a good chance it helps with fertility/sperm production. Brumation really isn't hard, you just gotta reduce the photoperiod to 10 hours or so a day, lower the temps some, and most beardies will lay around all winter. Not all though, some beardies don't seem to want to brumate.

My dragon brumated his first winter as an adult, not eating crickets for about 3 months, but this winter he didn't really brumate like last year. He slowed down though. The moral of the story, brumating your dragon really can't hurt, just provide the right conditions and see if your dragon wants to brumate or not. Offer them some food from time to time to test their appetite.
