louie-sib Dec 16, 2006 03:44 PM

Hi all im just wondering other than rats or mice what other rodents are easy to breed? I breed rats and mice i have about 120 rat tubs and about 40 mice tubs but im looking to breed some other rodents for pet shops. If i can do hamsters or gerbils are there any breed that can live with each other all the time ---- 1 male to 2 females?

Thanks so much

Do your local shops need/want anything else? I know here we are knee deep in hamsters and gerbils offered to us by random family litters. It is nice to get a well breed black bear hamster or something gentle. BUT Syrian hams don't group breed and so you are taking up a lot of space for breeding.
Dwarf hamsters breed in groups but are mean and a pain and I would make sure the shops will take them in any number.

How about those Gambian Giant Pouch Rats? They are breeding on Grassy Key in Florida. I think this is the same thing they are using to sniff out land mines in Iraq? I think you need a permit to breed them, but maybe there’s some need for them now. They get to be like nine pounds or something, check them out.

Here in Florida, you need a permit just to own them (entirely aside from the monkeypox related import ban). That is probably the case in a lot of other states if they weren't banned outright after the monkeypox thing. That sort of limist your customer base... Most pet shops don't deal with things that require permits...except for some of he less scrupulous ones that leave it up to the customer to worry about whether it's legal...
