how do you get your mealworms out of their bedding

Adamnzo Aug 08, 2003 12:53 PM

i always pick mine up one by one and it takes forever.. surely there is an easier way to feed my geckos mealworms than just scooping every mealworm up one at a time... please give me some ideas and share how you go about doing it

mealworms are by far much easier to feed and take care of than crickets but it just takes way too much time to dig around in mealworm bedding to find each and every one of them!

haha help me?

lllreptile.com sells a little thing called a sand sifter for like $7. It works great for that. You can sift 500 mealworms out of that bedding crap they come in in less than a minute. Best $7 I ever spent.

I use a plastic spoon to dig mine out. That seems to work pretty good for me since I don't want to use my fingers Hope that helps!

If you can find a litter box scooper (you know the kind for cats) with small enough slits ... it could help. They are pretty cheap too!

I use a metal food strainer. the holes let the bedding through but not the worms. Of 500 mealies only 2 fell through. Hehe my wife wasnt that thrilled by me using it though! :P

Herpcare sells a cricket duster that has smaller openings so its great for small mealies....plus you can put calcium or vitamin powder in the bottom compartment and dust after you sift!

of all the specialty stuff for reptiles this was the best thing i ever bought($7).....

I usually have a couple pieces of moistened paper towel over the mealworms and substrate. They love to run around through it to suck out moisture and eat the paper even. I pick up the paper when I want to feed and just shake off the 15 or so that are on the sheet. Guess this would be the cheapest way to go
