New monitors

I just got this pair of flavies Yesterday from Luke Campbell. These pick are just the male. The female is a little shy currently for obvious reasons. I'll post picks of her when she has acclimated to her new home.
Best,

Congrats, I would like to see the whole animals. From those pics, I do not see it being a Flavi. Of course, those were odd angles.

Good luck, cheers

Thanks Frank,
I don't know how old they are, but they are beautiful and every bit of what I wanted. Do you have any enclosure recommendations?
Thanks for the input.

I do not know if you are aware of this, but I was the lucky one who founded flavis in this country. I have been breeding pure flavis for much longer then the crosses. Since 93.

I have two clutches about to hatch, any day or week or month. You never know with them.

I breed mine in six foot round trough like cages. I built them out of fiberglass. But for all purposes, they are six foot round troughs. Six foot dia. 30 inches high, with lids and covers.

I have kept them in narrow troughs, like yours, but nesting became very very inconsistant. I could and did recieve good hatchable clutches, but sometimes had difficult nestings. The the larger cages, they nested very very very consistant, without problem.

Otherwise, my setup is very much like yours. Different type of dirt. I am lucky enough to have dirt on my property and nearby thats identical to dirt from where they live.

I have been over much of their natural range, both center and west(two different animals) And seen other variants as well.

Surprisingly in nature, and particularly the western forms, they are much smaller then our captives. Often not exceeding two feet in total lenght. But in the center I found several males around three feet which is what the males normally achieve in captivity. Again in nature, females rarely exceed 18 inches.

They are great monitors, both in captivity and in nature. The babies of pure flavis can be very very pretty. These three guys hatched at the very same time. I thought that was funny. Notice who stole the visual show. hahahahahaha Cheers

Thanks Frank,
The dirt I used is Columbia River sand/dirt stuff. It seems to have the right characteristics; holds moisture well, no organics, holds a burrow. They seem to be using it, so I don't plan on changing that until I know I'm not getting the desired results. Can you post a pic of the dirt you use so I can see the consistency of it? You mentioned lids and covers. Do you prevent them from seeing you most of the time?
Thanks for your advice.

No sir, I have not experienced flavis being shy, either sex. They will run my down and tackle me and take my wallet. No kidding, when you mentioned your female was shy for some reason(unknown to me) I thought that was very odd.

I assumed you were thinking she was shy because of some reproductive event. In my experience, the more gravid they get, the more bold they become. Cheers

I was refering to the change of homes, I just thought she might be stressed from the move. She seems fine to me. Both were eager to feed and seem to be fat and happy. They are active and thermoregulating like normal. I was just wondering if you were refering to a cover as a separate function from a lid.
Cheers,
