I do not know if you are aware of this, but I was the lucky one who founded flavis in this country. I have been breeding pure flavis for much longer then the crosses. Since 93.
I have two clutches about to hatch, any day or week or month. You never know with them.
I breed mine in six foot round trough like cages. I built them out of fiberglass. But for all purposes, they are six foot round troughs. Six foot dia. 30 inches high, with lids and covers.
I have kept them in narrow troughs, like yours, but nesting became very very inconsistant. I could and did recieve good hatchable clutches, but sometimes had difficult nestings. The the larger cages, they nested very very very consistant, without problem.
Otherwise, my setup is very much like yours. Different type of dirt. I am lucky enough to have dirt on my property and nearby thats identical to dirt from where they live.
I have been over much of their natural range, both center and west(two different animals) And seen other variants as well.
Surprisingly in nature, and particularly the western forms, they are much smaller then our captives. Often not exceeding two feet in total lenght. But in the center I found several males around three feet which is what the males normally achieve in captivity. Again in nature, females rarely exceed 18 inches.
They are great monitors, both in captivity and in nature. The babies of pure flavis can be very very pretty. These three guys hatched at the very same time. I thought that was funny. Notice who stole the visual show. hahahahahaha Cheers
