Feeding

fauxsanity Dec 17, 2006 03:39 PM

When I got into kingsnakes a little over year ago the petshop personal that I bought my MBK from told me to feed in a seperate container. I can see some of the benefits of doing so (no substraight / no feeding responce in cages)...but the more snakes I get, it's taking longer to feed, I need more feeding boxes or a different way of doing things...I enjoy the interaction with my animals, and I get on the computer while I'm waiting for them to chow down.(that's why I'm posting so much..LOL). But somethings gotta change. I was just curious how you guys with larger collections feed.

I feed in cage except for my neonates, which I feed inside of deli cups in cage.

Swallowing substrate was a bigger problem when people used pine bark. With aspen, I don't think it is a problem.

I only get feeding response strikes when there is a smell of rodent in the air. On feeding day. Otherwise - I don't get bit. I also handle though fairly often when not feeding, so the snakes know that opening up the cage doesn't mean it's chow time.

The lavender I bought this year had a very strong feeding response and would go after me every time I picked her up. Within a couple weeks, that stopped. I suspect that most snakes that have in cage feeding responses have them because they are handled only to feed.
